1. The Column / Layer Method
Instead of trying to count blocks randomly, teach your child to audit the structure systematically using columns:
- Count the number of vertical columns.
- Determine the height (number of cubes) in each column.
- Multiply column height by column count and sum the total.
Example: A 3-layer structure with two 3-cube columns, three 2-cube columns, and four 1-cube columns:
(2 Γ 3) + (3 Γ 2) + (4 Γ 1) = 6 + 6 + 4 = 16 cubes.
2. Accounting for Hidden Supporting Blocks
A fundamental rule in 11+ spatial block questions is that blocks cannot float in mid-air.
- If a cube is visible on Layer 3 (the top layer), there MUST be supporting cubes directly beneath it on Layer 2 and Layer 1.
- Instruct students to count from top to bottom, filling in hidden supporting blocks for every upper-layer cube.
